<h3><strong>Mental Health Week; Work Safe Week and World Teachers Day.</strong></h3>
<p>October is a busy month for companies &amp; employers looking to implement wellness and well-being initiatives for their employees. Australia is focusing on Mental Health Week from the 10<sup>th</sup> – 17<sup>th</sup>. Work Safe Month has activities each week in October and we are celebrating all teachers on World Teachers Day Friday 30<sup>th</sup> October.</p>
<p><a href="https://corporatehands.com.au/corporate-wellness-services/">Onsite seated massage, yoga/meditation classes</a> or general health checks are an ideal way to celebrate and support your staff throughout October.</p>
<h3><strong>Mental Health Week &#8211;  10<sup>th</sup> – 17<sup>th</sup> October. </strong></h3>
<p>Mental Health Week is celebrated all around Australia, with each state and territory adopting its own theme and holding their own events each year.</p>
<p>In 2020, the Mental Health Week theme is <strong>Strengthening Our Community – Live, Learn, Work, Play. The </strong>aim is to increase mental wellbeing in local communities across Australia.</p>
<p>The events of recent times have been challenging and we would like to take this opportunity to bring awareness to the need to support people’s mental health now and into the future.</p>
<p>We can provide a holistic approach to mental health, by nurturing one another, sharing ideas, and learning from each other through every-day activities.</p>
<p>Mental Health Week has been coordinated in WA by the <a href="https://waamh.org.au/">Western Australian Association for Mental Health (WAAMH)</a> for more than 50 years and is supported by the Government of Western Australia, Mental Health Commission and <a href="http://www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au/grants">Lotterywest, </a>plus many community organisations.</p>
<h3><strong>Work Safe Month &#8211; Working together for health and safety this October </strong></h3>
<p>Safe Work Australia is the national policy agency responsible for <a href="https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/glossary#whs"><em>WHS</em></a> and workers’ compensation arrangements in Australia. Since 2009, they have run a national campaign each October to raise awareness of <em>WHS</em> and provide resources for Australian workplaces to run their own events.</p>
<p>Individuals, their families and the broader community are all impacted by work-related injury and illness. Last year in Australia, Safe Work Australia preliminary data shows that around 180 people died while doing their job. Around 107,000 people made a workers’ compensation claim for serious injury or illness in 2017-18.</p>
<p>No one should be unsafe at work and no injury or death is acceptable. There is more that we can do, and together we can make a difference.</p>
<p>This is why, during October each year, we ask businesses, employers and workers, across Australia to join National Safe Work Month and <strong>commit to providing safe and healthy workplaces for all Australian</strong></p>
<h3><strong>World Teachers Day – Australia  – Friday 30<sup>th</sup> October 2020</strong></h3>
<p>A day to acknowledge the efforts and important contribution teachers make to our society.</p>
<p>Celebrated in more than 100 countries, World Teachers&#8217; Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994. It is held internationally on the 5th of October, however as the day usually falls during school holidays, Australia holds its celebrations on the last Friday of October each year.</p>
<p>One of the most significant reasons teachers leave the profession is due to high levels of stress. Massage addresses the physical as well as the mental toll that stress can take on employees &#8211; and provides an appreciated break!</p>

A research report by Robert Walters found that 64% of companies in Australia and New Zealand offered some sort of corporate wellness program. In the UK, it is estimated that only 45% of companies currently offer workplace wellness. In recent years however these numbers are on the rise and more companies are investing in wellness.</p>
<p class="p1">A <a href="https://hbr.org/2014/02/in-defense-of-corporate-wellness-programs" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">report from Harvard</a> found that for US based companies, medical expenses on average fell by $3.27 for every dollar spent on wellness programs, and that absenteeism expenses fell by $2.73. There is also an abundance of research suggesting that wellness programs boost productivity, reduce stress, and increase employee engagement and communication.</p>

<p><a href="https://corporatehands.com.au/services/corporate-meditation/">Meditation</a> is a process of drawing your attention inward to simply observe your state of being.  Meditation practice has profound benefits that include stress reduction, greater self-awareness, self- esteem, clarity, creativity, and calm. These benefits will help you to build confidence, make concise decisions, improve problem-solving, and focus on tasks without distraction. It’s about tuning into your awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings. You’re learning to observe them without judgment. Meditation is allowing you to be the best version of you!</p>
<p>Meditation was first developed in India, a very long time ago but many of the simple practices of compassion and insight remain true today, however the meditation practice for the western world of the 2020s does not require the same intensive training. Phew!</p>
<p>When I was in my early twenties I went on a journey into self-discovery and one path was Buddhist meditation, believing I sought enlightenment. Like I was ever living life even close to a Buddhist monk! Alas, I was never disciplined enough, nor did I want to be. No disrespect to practicing Buddhists – they are a species unto their own and are truly incredibly compassionate and spiritual beings. After a year of attempting to sit in the lotus position and on hard cold floors, listening to the breathing, and coughing of others while dealing with back and leg cramps I decided it must be so much easier than this.., and you know what – it is.</p>
<p>Many people who are new to meditation may find the practice of being still challenging but practicing little by little even 5 minutes a day is all that’s needed. It is better to practice often and in small bits, rather than long periods once a week. Committing to short daily meditation sessions allows your brain to learn at its own pace, creating a sense of clarity, the results will astound you.</p>
<p>Regularity forms a habit, when we do this, we stop making excuses Little by little you will see results – perhaps in as little as a couple of weeks! Have faith in the process. You will develop a deeper sense of self, peace, and fulfillment with both work and life.</p>
<h3><strong>Here are a few steps to get you started:</strong></h3>

<h6><strong> </strong><strong>Choose a time and place that suits you!</strong></h6>
</li>
</ul>
<p>One of the most effective ways to create a habit for your <a href="https://corporatehands.com.au/services/corporate-meditation/">meditation</a> sessions is by doing it in the same place and same time every day. I find early mornings before breakfast is ideal, however, you decide what works for you. Then decide on a quiet place to sit, anywhere is fine where you feel relaxed and distractions are limited. If you’re new to meditation start with 5 minutes and work up to 15 minutes. Don’t place any pressure on yourself, do what feels right for you. The most exciting thing here is that you are making a start.</p>

<h6><strong> </strong><strong>Let’s get comfortable</strong></h6>
</li>
</ul>
<p>A sitting position is best for focus, either in a chair or on the floor and if so &#8211; support your back by sitting up against a wall or couch. If sitting in a chair, place your feet on the floor and position yourself with a good posture. Place your hands in your lap and keep your palms open to receive. We are not all-natural yogis that can support a lotus position! So please position yourself according to your comfort, taking care not to slouch and look after your posture.  Personally, I love to sit on the floor up against the couch and pull my knees up and let them relax fully outward with my feet together, this is my Zen position and its comfortable.</p>

<h6><strong>Seated Meditation </strong></h6>
</li>
</ul>
<p><strong> </strong>Start with your breath, slowly inhaling and exhaling, do this for one minute to help you relax. Think of one thing you are grateful for, and feed this into your breathing. It could be anything from your family, your breakfast, or simply that you can find 5 minutes to sit quietly. Feel that gratitude for one more minute.</p>
<p>Continue to breathe normally, focus on the inhale and exhale, and bring your focus to your solar plexus or your belly button, breathe in and out. Repeat. Let your thoughts come and go. When you find your thoughts wandering, bring yourself back to your breath, in, and out. Continue for 5 minutes or longer if comfortable. It is not so much in the quantity of time but the quality.</p>
<p>Little by little and regular practice in as little as 5 minutes per day, you will notice wandering thoughts dissipating, your focus on the breath becomes easier, your mind calmer and little insights, clarity, and joy come to surface… little by little.</p>

<h6><strong> Walking Meditation</strong></h6>
</li>
</ul>
<p><strong> </strong>Spending time outside in nature allows us a great opportunity to step away from the busyness and lessen all distractions so that we can find clarity on our reasoning and questions.</p>
<p>Go for walk, notice your surroundings, look out for patterns, watch people – their faces and antics, listen to noises, and breathe it all in. Pay attention to little signs and feelings that pop up. The Universe is always trying to show us things, we just need to notice them.</p>
<h3><strong>Benefits of Daily Meditation </strong></h3>
<p><strong> </strong>Science has proven that <a href="https://www.headspace.com/science/meditation-benefits">the benefits of meditation</a> are too good to ignore. And while we don’t need to meditate daily to experience its positive effect on your health and happiness, studies have shown that we can unlock even more benefits when we meditate for consecutive days. The benefits of daily meditation are well-documented and widespread, ranging from reduction in anxiety, lower blood pressure, increased immunity, and better sleep. A study from researchers at John Hopkins University <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/1809754">found</a> general <a href="https://www.headspace.com/mindfulness">mindfulness</a> meditation programs helped ease psychological symptoms of depression, anxiety, and pain related to stress. According to <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/mindfulness-meditation-associated-lower-stress-hormone">another study</a> using a generalised form of meditation, people who meditate have lower levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with physical and emotional stress. Creating a regular habit to meditate just 5 – 15 minutes per day will unlock even more benefits of meditation.</p>
<h3><strong>Being Mindful</strong></h3>
<p>Mindfulness is the quality of being present and fully engaged with whatever we&#8217;re doing in that moment. Paying attention to our current experience or environment with all of our senses – touch, sound, sight, smell, and taste.  It can be difficult to slow down and notice things when the world is so busy. Try to take the time to experience your environment and embrace it fully.</p>
<p>When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we&#8217;re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. This is true for both our personal lives with our families and professional lives in the workplace.</p>

<p>We are social beings. We crave connections.</p>
<p>As we spend more time in our homes, cut off from friends, work colleagues, and family in a bid to halt the spread of the virus, the lack of physical touch can be mentally challenging. This is especially true for those living alone.</p>
<p>Maintaining regular connections is more important than ever as we navigate these challenging times.</p>
<p>Connecting with people online or over the phone is vital, but the security of touch is an essential comfort for us all, whether this is a hug or an <a href="https://corporatehands.com.au/services/">onsite massage at work</a>. Touch is a rich source of security and safety for us all. It shows you care and in this current crisis, this is essential for our mental health.</p>
<p>Whilst we are waiting for stay at home restrictions to lift, consider booking in regular online catch-ups with Zoom, Skype and Facebook, this could be in the form of a group book club, family dinners, or evening chats with friends. We can all be more creative and find new ways to connect.</p>
<p>Be kind to others and check in with those who may be feeling lonely, particularly the elderly, this is a good way to feel more connected and create a sense of community. Social distancing does not mean a lack of connection, we need to stay socially and emotionally close to others.</p>
<p>It is important to remember this challenging time will pass and we will continue with our lives both at work and at home. Once we return to our workplaces the need to ensure good relationships in conjunction with care incentives for employees, are crucial to increase happiness and reduce stress in the office. This, in turn, can translate into better work performance. Employers who support social connections and employee well-being incentives will help build a successful workforce. <p>Diet and Exercise is another way to increase not only mental happiness but also our physical self. Regular exercise plays a huge part in keeping us mentally well. Exercise releases those feel-good chemicals like dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin, helping to improve mood and reduce stress.</p>
<p>Walking is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety, stay fit, and boost our immune system so we’re less susceptible to infections.</p>
<p>As the Gyms are currently closed, we are still able to utilise the parks and walkways to increase our fitness and spend a little time outdoors. The increase with online fitness apps provides ample options for indoor activity as well. You can also get creative by dancing with your kids, climbing stairs, and playing ball with your pets.</p>
<p><a href="https://corporatehands.com.au/services/">Yoga and meditation</a> are great options to keep you centered and grounded. If this something you haven’t done previously there are many online apps or perhaps when you are back at work, your workplace may include these in their<a href="https://corporatehands.com.au/services/"> employee well-being programs</a>.</p>
<p>The World Health Organisation recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a combination of both. If this is not possible a nice leisurely walk or sitting the garden is better than none at all.</p>
<p>Try to maintain a healthy diet, it’s all too easy to reach out for comfort food, but if we set some goals around good eating, resisting the urge to binge on junk food or sweet treats, we will feel much better for it. However, don’t deny yourself the occasional treat but keep in mind a diet high in fat, salt, and sugar is likely to aggravate anxiety and weaken your immune system.</p>
<p>Fresh fruit and vegetables plus reducing processing foods are healthier and surprisingly easy ‘cook at home’ options. You can get wonderfully creative with the many online recipes. <p>One of the biggest challenges we’re all facing is how to manage the huge disruption to our daily lives. Our work, home, and social lives have been completely upended and we are now having to find a new normal.</p>
<p>When so much seems uncertain, it’s important that we try to establish a routine in our days to provide some stability. This is where is it important to set some simple goals.</p>
<ul>
<li>Regular routines, like getting up at 7:00 am and going for a walk at 7:30 am for 30 minutes.</li>
<li>Plan each day to include a work-out routine or a 15-minute meditation.</li>
<li>Schedule in a phone or zoom call to a friend or family member twice a week.</li>
<li>Plan your meals ahead of time, perhaps set aside one night to explore a brand-new recipe.</li>
</ul>
<p>Creating a plan for each day, with set times for each task can provide stability and comfort at a time of uncertainty. Even if it’s simple things like what time you get up, walk the dog, deciding your meal plan, or talking to a friend, having a structure will provide more clarity in your day.</p>
<p>If you’re working from home, you can create structure by having set start and finish times, allocating a specific space for work, and taking regular breaks.</p>

<p>Hygiene and infection control are at the top of everyone’s minds at the moment. Assurances with corporate massage and hygiene protocols are a top priority and need to be strictly adhered to for the continuation of best practice within the corporate massage industry and workplace wellness programs.</p>
<p>An infection &amp; hygiene control policy is an essential requirement to help businesses and event management companies understand the best practice needed to minimise the risk to clients, staff, and practitioners acquiring a healthcare-related infection.</p>
<h3>Hand Hygiene is Top Priority for <a href="https://corporatehands.com.au/services/corporate-massage/">Onsite Workplace Massage</a></h3>
<p>Hand hygiene is considered a primary measure to reduce the spread of infection. Massage and allied health practitioners need to perform the correct hand hygiene techniques, these are outlined in accordance with the <a href="https://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/resources/posters/en/">World Health Organisation Guidelines</a>. Hand hygiene refers to any action of hand cleansing, such as handwashing with soap and water or hand rubbing with the use of an alcohol-based sanitiser.</p>
<p>Hand hygiene is essential before and after contact with each client in addition to hourly breaks to thoroughly wash hands with soap and water. To further promote correct hand hygiene, it is necessary to keep nails short and clean.</p>

This will only be provided with the permission of the participant and in the absence of any cuts, abrasions, or skin conditions.</p>
